Fall Fun with Sacred Waters CO. What's going on here at Sacred Waters, the Fishing and such.... Things are just starting to wind down here at Sacred Waters Co. The Fun Never Ends here at Sacred Waters CO. but Winter is Coming..... Don't fret, Fall Fishing has been Awesome to say the least. Just as the waters were getting to slightly below average we have received rain and snow up high boosting the flows back up, slowing the ice growth on some of our waters that do freeze up, giving fishes more water to easily migrate about, and a little more color than usual low & clear conditions of Autumn. We are currently experiencing Indian Summer with forecast of clear sunny skies and high temperatures in the 60F's. This too should only help keep the waters full with good color as snow slowly melts and trickles down into the aquifer. We have many fishes moving about our rivers here in our Sacred Waters. Currently brown trout, brook char, & kokanee salmon are in prespawn, spawning, or post spawn and rainbow, cuttbow, cutthroat trout following to gorge on high protein eggs and/or all species migrating to finding good wintering pools to survive the winter. (ATTENTION: "Please Do Not Fish for Spawning Fish!!! Brook Char, Brown Trout, and Kokanee Salmon are in pre-spawn, full spawn or just entering post-spawn. If you see two trophy sized trout parred up on a redd just admire their size & beauty and walk away. Ultimately you are saving the lives of possibly hundreds to thousands of fishes you and many more will have the chance to catch in the future by leaving those two fish to continue to finish their spawning ritual." "Please be careful wading around too much this time of year too, especially in gravelly side channels, tailouts and heads of pools, these are usually places fish make redds and spawn. If you see clean depressions in the gravel, or what looks to be a pile or pit of clean gravel please avoid wading through it." NOTE: There is NO Snagging of Kokonee Salmon Allowed in the Williams Creek Drainage!!! ) Many of you have heard me speak of trading Quality Over Quantity of fishes when it comes to cold weather fishing of Late Fall, Winter, &/or Early Spring fishing, we aren't there yet, we are in a perfect period of Quantity of Quality with lots of fishes of all sizes being caught daily. I have also noticed after many years of fishing and guiding these Rivers/Ranches with the advent of Scared Waters and our management plans the lessen fishing pressure and well distributed fishing pressure significantly better fishing than all the years in the past. Fall can be one of the best times of year to fish this area or most anywhere. But in the past with retail outfitting churn 'em & burn through attitudes by Autumn even though the fishing improves because of the a fore mentioned factors. The factor of the fish being beat on on a daily basis does make them more skittish and well hell just smarter and usually the lowest, clearest, colder water of the year and clear sunny weather can make the fishing even tougher with no margin of error for these smart, skittish, wild fish. Not the case anymore! As stated in my last blog post My Professional Anglers', my personal & ranch availability to our Donors, Guests, Charities, and Ranch Owners has made scheduling quick and easy. As well as looking into the future booking extending our fishing season to the truly "Best" times to fish this area. Yes, July and August are Not the only times to fish around here actually they can some of the Worst times. I have been pushing this through retail tourist outfitting for years and have taught a lot of people this but through Sacred Waters it's made it much easier and everyone is only loving every minute of it, as well as learning more on becoming more well rounded anglers... And it's just the start of the So-Called "Off-Season”..... reminder to, those of you who have not booked up or used all your guided fishing days we do fish year-round as you know, but some Ranches availability or access could be in question moving into Autumn & Winter Seasons due to snow, road closures &/or freezing waters. So in order the East Fork Ranch on the East fork of the San Juan River is accessed by a Forest Service Road that will close when the USFS feels it's time usually Nov. which could be any day now, Weber Ranches on the Upper San Juan River upstream of Pagosa Springs are accessible till the river freezes usually Nov.-Dec. and little to no worries on Pick_Bar Ranch the Pine River/Los Pinos River Tailwater open year-round but flows can get extremely low at times in the Fall & Winter. Just keep that in mind..... And that all that information is on the Conservation Waters Page. (Reminder Our PA's will NOT let you fish for bedded up spawners.) Exciting News too we have been expanding our waters/ranches, also we can use our Private retail waters/ranches on the San Juan River “Proper” and on the Pine River / Los Pinos River Tailwater if needed due to seasonal conditions that may limit access to our Sacred Waters Only Ranches. Newest Ranch/Water added to the mix some of you know of as the Fairway Ranch on the San Juan River just downstream from Pagosa Springs. Due to its location below the Hot Springs it rarely freezes for more than a day or two at our coldest winters so fishes most all year-round. This location is easy wading with large, slow, deep, warmer wintering pools so fish tend to stack up on this ranch in the winter months. I had been resting the waters on Fairway since bringing it into Sacred Waters program due to it's ability to fish well when other locations are inaccessible or frozen. As always I update my personal & Sacred Waters Social Media more often than the website cause I can from my cell phone. So please check those Instagram & Facebook pages to see up to date happenings in our area and with Sacred Waters. Please feel free to call us or email for any up to date fishing conditions, reports, to book a guided trip &/or upcoming events/volunteer opportunities.
